UK Envoy to Sahel: Libyan Security, Prosperity Depend on West African Countries

The UK Special Envoy to the Sahel, Stephen O’Brien MP, during a visit to Libya said he had explored the political, economic and cultural links between Libya and the countries of Western African and found that these links were inextricable.
In a statement release by the British Embassy in Tripoli on 19 September, O’Brien said “The security and prosperity of Libya is, in part, dependent on the stability of the wider region. Good regional cooperation is essential for Libya to develop into a stable, secure and prosperous country.”

During his two-day visit to Tripoli, Mr. O’Brien held talks the Minister of Defence and Interior, the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Chief of Staff and Commander of the Border Guard.

He said good regional cooperation “is essential for Libya to develop into stable, secure and prosperous country”.

But he did not elaborate on what he meant with ‘cooperation’ or in what fields and at what levels.

O’Brien also held talks with representatives from the Department of Illegal Migration, as well as representatives from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, UNHCR and the EU border Assistance Mission.
