Civil rights leaders seized in Tripoli

The chairman of the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHRL) Alhadi Ben Taleb and a board member Ali Alosta were kidnapped in Tripoli today.

In a statement published this evening, the commission said that the two had been seized at midday and driven off by an armed gang in Almadar Street next to the capital’s Sidi Mesri area.

The organisation has begged UNSMIL, the EU, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch to intervene urgently to secure the two men’s release.

NCRCL has found itself regularly pitted against Libya Dawn which it has accused of human rights crimes.  Last September, it accused Dawn of breaking into its headquarters in Fornaj, not far from where the two men were abducted today.
