Italian Foreign Minister departs Libya after short formal visit

The Italian Foreign Minister, Angelino Alfano, has left Libya together with the delegation that accompanied him on his formal visit to Tripoli, which only took a few hours.

The Libyan Foreign Minister of the UN-proposed government, Mohammed Sayala, was in Mitiga Airport to see his counterpart off and then said in a statement that the visit was part of Italy’s support for the Presidential Council (PC) and for finding a peaceful solution to the crisis as well as reaching national reconciliation.

Sayala also said that Alfano met with Fayez Al-Sirraj, the Head of the PC, and his deputy, Ahmed Mitig, as well as with the Head of the High Council of State, Abdelrahman Al-Sweihli.

“The meetings discussed the latest political, economic, and security issues in Libya to achieve a peaceful and stabilized country.” Sayala added.

He added that Alfano expressed Italy’s support for stability in Libya and for developing the cooperation between the two countries in all fields.
