IOM: Over 60.000 Libyan IDPs returned to Sirte after IS defeat

The UN International Organisation for Migration confirmed that over 60.000 Libyan internally displaced persons (IDPs) had returned to Sirte and the telecommunication as well as mobile and internet networks have been reoporated in the city for the first time in two days.

Sirte was the IS militants’ stronghold in Libya before they had been defeated by Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous operation after 7 months of day and night fighting.

In a statement on Tuesday, IOM said about 8.528 returning displaced families are now in dire need for aids in Sirte, adding that there are about 50% shortages of many basics such as hospitals, schools and other facilities.

IOM also warned of hikes in prices of foods and houses’ rent, which could put the lives of the IDPs at risk.
