EU supports Paris meeting

One of the spokespersons of the European Union (EU) told the Italian News Agency (Aki), on Wednesday, that Brussels looks forward to seeing the Libyan factions benefiting from Paris meeting and return to intensive and comprehensive dialogue with specific commitments.

The spokesperson said that it is not true that the EU is not happy with Paris meeting, stressing that the EU had talked with Paris about its initiative towards Liya.

The EU considers the meeting between the head of the Presidential Council (PC) of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, and the commander of the army of the House of Representatives (HoR), General Khalifa Haftar, as an important step to achieve the reconciliation and political solution in Libya.

The spokesperson referred to the High Representative of the EU for foreign affairs, Federica Mogherini, who confirmed, on Tuesday, that she talked about the meeting with French President, Emmanuel Macron, and his Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian.

The EU intends to continue supporting the efforts of the reconciliation in Libya by providing financial assistance to strengthen the GNA and to help the Libyan people.

It is worth mentioning the foreign ministers of the EU member countries called in Brussels, on 17 of July, the Libyan factions to start talking about limited amendments in the Political Agreement.

Europe thinks that implementing the Political Agreement would pave the way to adopt a new constitution and hold presidential and constitutional elections in Libya.
