Blackout sweeps through west and south Libya

The Libyan capital has been plunged into a total blackout hours after calm descended with the holding of the ceasefire that ended days of bloody clashes.

Official sources from the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) said the west and south of Libya both went into a total blackout as the electricity networks in those regions collpased, citing the effect of Trioli clashes on the power grid in the city.

“Repairing teams could not reach the power stations and grids in areas of clashes in Tripoli, thus the network had to collapse into a total blackout.” Head of Media Office of GECOL Mohammed Al-Takouri told local media outlets.

Tripoli and the rest of the country have been enduring the heat of the scorching summer amid daily power outages of between 5 to 10 hours depending on the district.
