The Libyan Human Rights Solidarity organization (HRS) has decried inviting Khalifa Haftar, Fayez Al-Sirraj and Aqila Saleh to the Palermo Conference despite “their horrific records of human rights abuses.”
It said in a statement that the three men should be sent to trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for their human rights and international humanitarian law abuses in the last four years.
“They should go to The Hague not to Palermo. Instead of arresting them for their violations, Italy treated them as statesmen” HRS statement added.
It indicated that there are videos documenting the orders of Khalifa Haftar to his forces’ leaders and those orders amount to war crimes, citing a video where Haftar says in Benghazi nit to take prisoners, which it said means killing the captives.
HRS also cited a video for Haftar where he wanted to deprive 120.000 Derna residents from living needs.
The organization cited other videos for the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aqila Saleh, showing loyalty to Haftar and his actions and his financial as well as military aids’ acceptance from Egypt and UAE, which HRS said is a violation of UN resolutions and amounts to war crimes.
HRS also added that Special Deterrence Force (SDF) is running a Mitiga base prison in Tripoli where 2600 inmates, including women, are being held illegally and subjected to torture.
“Fayez Al-Sirraj did not object or express concern over the violations of the SDF and he is supporting it and its actions instead, paying its personnel fixed salaries.” HRS remarked.
“It is unethical to keep a blind eye to the violations of those three men and the institutions they lead in Libya. Their impunity encourages others to go down the same road.” The human rights body concluded.
