France opposed to military solution in Libya, Foreign Minister reiterates

France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has reiterated his country’s commitment to supporting political solution in Libya not a military one.

Theses remarks came as Le Drian arrived on a formal visit in Tripoli on Monday and met with the Head of the Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sirraj, and many other officials in the capital.

“France is with the efforts of the UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame as they aim to unite state institutions and hold elections by the end of the year.” Le Drian indicated.

He also said that significant progress has been achieved in the south of the country in the face of “terrorist groups, organised criminals and armed foreign groups who, for a long time, have fuelled instability in the region.”

France’s FM is also due to meet Khalifa Haftar in eastern region and UN envoy Ghassan Salame during his Libya visit.

Al-Sirraj told Le Drian that his meeting with Haftar in Abu Dhabi was a consultative one and that his government sees one and only solution to Libya’s crisis – the political solution and unity of institutions under a civilian state.
