Grand Mufti demands agenda of UN-backed National Conference be made public

Libya’s top religious cleric Shaikh Sadiq Al-Gharyan said on Wednesday that Libyans should not take part in the UN-backed National Conference until they know the agenda and names of the attendees.

Speaking in his weekly Islam and Life program on Tanasuh TV, he said there must be transparency about the conference, and that its conclusions should be regarded as recommendations and not binding decisions, pointing out that it is not permissible to go into the unknown.

“How the participants were selected, and what topics are to be discussed in this conference?” He asked.

The Grand Mufti added that it is not the authority of about a hundred people chosen by the United Nations to meet and decide the fate of Libya, stressing that the fate of the country needs referendum.

He expressed concerns that the UN-backed National Conference might be an extension to Abu Dhabi meeting between Chairman of Presidential Council Fayez Sarraj and warlord Khalifa Haftar that aims to give power to the latter rather than discussing issues that matter Libyans.

The Head of UN mission Ghassan Salame Wednesday in a presser in Tripoli that the National Conference will be held in Ghadames city on April 14-16 with the participation of between 120-150 persons representing all Libyan parties without exception.

Earlier, President of the High Council of State Khaled Al-Mishri demanded guarantees to ensure the implementation of the National Conference outcomes. He also demanded to know names of the attendees and on what basis they have been invited.
