Libya GNA: Cooperation with US in fight against terrorism continuing

Spokesman of the internationally-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), Muhannad Younus, announced yesterday that cooperation with the United States in the fight against terrorism “has not stopped”.

Younus explained that work is under way to strengthen cooperation in various fields, including the return of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).

AFRICOM’s mission in Libya included providing military support for diplomatic missions, counterterrorism activities, and improving security throughout the region.

On 7 April, AFRICOM announced in a statement that it had withdrawn its forces from Libya due to the security conditions in the country.

On 4 April, Libyan strongman, General Khalifa Haftar launched a military offensive to take control of the capital Tripoli amid regional and international condemnation.  Weeks later, Bloomberg quoted three unnamed US officials as saying that President Donald Trump supported Haftar’s military operation.
