It is reported that her husband had gunshot wounds to his eye and leg and is in a Benghazi hospital.It is unclear why Sirgiwa was abducted, but it is widely accepted that it was for her outspoken opposition to the continuing military assault by Hafter’s LNA on the capital Tripoli.
In an interview on 16 July, the night before she was abducted, with the pro-LNA TV station, Al-Hadath, Sirgiwa had reiterated her opposition to the ongoing armed conflict in Tripoli. She stated her support for a unity government in Libya and denounced “extremists” on both sides of the conflict.
