Amnesty International urged the leader of what it described as the Libyan National Army (LNA), Khalifa Haftar, and all parties involved in the fighting to urgently open humanitarian corridors to give impartial assistance and save the lives of civilians still trapped in the city as the army advances.

Sixteen fighters have been killed and 11 others wounded in the eastern Libyan city of Derna. Fighting has intensified between forces loyal to renegade General Khalifa Haftar and local militias.

Forces loyal to Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar said Monday they had seized several districts of Derna, promising “imminent liberation” of the last militant bastion in the country’s east.

The spokesman for the Omar al-Mukhtar Operations Room of the self-proclaimed army of Khalifa Haftar, Abdelkarim Sabra, said they are about to liberate Derna in east Libya from what he described as terrorism, adding that their forces will continue military actions throughout all of Libya.
