Since early morning on Sunday, the coastal city of Sabratha – some 75 km west of Tripoli – has been witnessing fearsome clashes between two armed groups from the city.

Despite further appeals for a ceasefire in Sabratha from local officials as well as from Libyan human rights organisations clashes in the town continued for a third day today.

Sabratha’s mayor Hassen Dhawadi has said that his town is fed up with the activities of people-smugglers launching migrants from neighbourhood beaches and is clamping down by mounting armed patrols.

The former mayors of seven municipalities in the east who were replaced by military officers want their towns back. They are arguing that now the Libyan National Army (LNA) has largely defeated the terrorist threat, there is no reason why these towns should not be returned to civilian rule.

Six years since the Tawarghas were displaced from their hometown by Misratah militia forces in August 2011, the community of about 40,000 people are still unable to return safely to their homes, Amnesty International said today.

Armed groups engaged in heavy fighting in Janan Atia district in Ajaylat town, some 80 kilometers west of Tripoli, on Wednesday, leaving a number of people dead and others wounded.

Clashes erupted Wednesday among groups of gunmen of Omar Al-Mukhtar operations room near Martuba checkpoint in east Derna. According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen used light weapons to resolve the dispute over who should be controlling the checkpoint that separate Derna from the areas eastward.

The UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, vowed Tuesday to be unbiased and to find a new mechanism for dialogue among the Libyan conflicting parties so that they reach a consensus to amend the Libyan Political Agreement (LPA.)

Derna Local Council (DLC) has issued a distress call to local and international organizations to intervene and lift the siege imposed by Dignity Operation militia groups on the city.

Wehda Hospital in the besieged city of Derna in eastern Libya has received a copy of the order of the Omar Al-Mukhtar Operations Room of Dignity Operation that allows supply of medicines and medical equipment to the hospital, the Head Director Mansour Ben Fayed said in a statement.
